Teacher of Humanities in Middle School, UWCSEA

Sarah teaches Middle School English and Humanities at UWC South East Asia. Born in Seoul, Korea, Sarah emigrated to the US at the age of three and grew up in New York. After completing her BA and MA at the University of Pennsylvania and her Ed M at Columbia University, she imagined settling in the New England area. Life, however, had other plans and led to stays in Dallas, Tokyo, Seoul, and Hong Kong before she settled in Singapore.

Sarah was drawn to the UWC community both as a parent and a teacher after learning of its mission, which aligned with the very motivation that led her to the education field. Notwithstanding the tremendous opportunities and experiences afforded to her by the hard work and sacrifice of her parents, Sarah also recalls encountering bouts of intolerance and prejudice (even in culturally diverse New York). These encounters affirmed her conviction that the classroom can and should provide a forum to promote dialogue and understanding as part of a holistic learning programme. She is happy to share her personal experiences and life anecdotes to illustrate specific lessons or to encourage meaningful conversations about individual perspectives.

“UWCSEA is an exciting and thriving environment where students, teachers and all stakeholders in the community challenge and inspire each other both inside and outside the classroom.”
