Mark Sylvester

24 March 2017

Teacher of Physics and Theory of Knowledge (ToK), UWC Adriatic

Born in South Africa, Mark always wanted to teach, in spite of doing an Engineering degree at University of Cape Town. On graduating, in 1976, he grabbed the chance to teach Physics at Waterford Kamhlaba UWC, which was a wonderful escape from the daily identity crisis that was life in apartheid South Africa. Mark moved to UWC Adriatic in 1983, when the College came to Duino, and has been there ever since, apart from exchanges that took him to UWC-USA and later to UWC Mahindra College, and a 3 year spell as one of the founding staff at UWC Mostar, an experience that recalled the Swaziland days, being in a College where one was reminded daily of why we were there. Mark used to take students caving in the days when risk assessments were not required, but these days finds orienteering to be the best thing outside the Physics Lab.

"Being a UWC teacher is a great chance to integrate different aspects of life and beliefs in an effective and meaningful way."
